ICP, 10 May 2017

An armed group kidnapped several students and activists from their residence in the Sa’doun area in Baghdad early Monday 8th May 2017. The seven abductees had been prominent activists in the protest movement since its launch on 31 July 2015.
The Iraqi Communist Party (ICP) issued a statement condemning the kidnapping of the students and called the government to deal with such crimes that have been recently escalating
According to the statement of the ICP, the security authorities have yet kept silent about the issue and evidence shows that the federal government and its security agencies are neglecting this crime of abduction. Kidnappings of activists and journalists have taken place many times recently, particularly in the capital Baghdad, without the perpetrators being revealed.

The ICP called the Parliament and the Presidency of the Republic to address this situation and to emphasize that weapons should only be held by the state.

The statement went as follows:
"The efforts of criminal groups to silence the conscious patriotic voices that are calling for reform, combating corruption and improving the lives of Iraqis, have been unsuccessful. They will continue to fail despite the crimes they commit. The failure to put an end to the recurring crimes of kidnapping and intimidation will open the way for rogue groups and criminal gangs to threaten national security, taking advantage of the preoccupation of our valiant armed forces in the fight to defeat terrorist Daesh."

The ICP condemned the criminals "pursuing the path of terrorism" and demanded "freedom and safety for the kidnapped students and activists".
