ICP, 25 February 2017

AKEL General Secretary Andros Kyprianou released a statement after the meeting with a committee from the Communal Democracy Party (TDP) of Northern Cyprus. Kyprianou stated their concerns regarding the latest developments on the island. The House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus had accepted a decision which honours the "Enosis" idea in previous weeks. In the aftermath of this desicion, the peace negotiations between the Southern and Northern parts of Cyprus have been interrupted, and the latest meeting which was to be hold this week has been postponed.

Kyprianou stressed that "(a) bad solution is certainly dangerous and disastrous for the future of our country and people as a whole, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins. However, the non-solution of the Cyprus problem is also equally destructive and dangerous".

The GS also addressed the two leaders and stated that: "The two leaders must realize what the future of our country and people will be if there is a prolonged stalemate in the negotiations."

The statement concluded by calling for continuing the efforts for peace and keeping the hopes of a solution alive.
